Why use Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal is commonly used for shanks. It dampens vibration better than HSS, but not as well as carbide. Advantage over carbide is Heavy Metal will flex before it bends verse carbide that will snap. Carbide once chatter starts struggles to re-dampen verse Heavy Metal that will re-dampen while cutting. Cost today is very similar so no real advantage there.
